Amazing Love-How Can It Be?

Lent 2021

Lent is the period of 40 days which comes before Easter in the Christian calendar. Beginning on Ash Wednesday, Lent is a season of reflection and preparation before the celebrations of Easter. Lent as a way to foster simplicity and self-control; many use their cravings or desires for these items as a reminder to pray and to refocus on spiritual matters.

It all begins on Ash Wednesday. This is a tradition that actually dates back to 13 century, Ashes are placed on the head of the community of faith because ashes are a profound symbolism for observers. The ashes — a traditional sign of mourning and repentance — are meant to remind people that life is short and sacred and holy.

While COVID-19 and snowmeggeden has prevented a traditional observance of Ash Wednesday, nothing can prevent God’s Holy Spirit being from being ever present in this season with all who journey to the Cross.

In Psalm 51, David writes:

10 Create in me a pure heart, O God,

and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

11 Do not cast me from your presence

or take your Holy Spirit from me.

12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation

and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

It is a good practice for the people of God to pause and reflect on their journey of faith and Lent gives us that opportunity to do just that.  Perhaps there is something you want to give up or a spiritual discipline you want to improve or begin.  There is no better time than the present to connect with the Holy.

Therefore, in the Name of Jesus Christ,

I invite you, therefore, in the name of the Church,

to observe a holy Lent and be reminded of the mercy and forgiveness proclaimed in the gospel of Jesus Christ

and the need we all have to renew our faith.
